Sightseeings in Cowichan: First Nations Heritage in Cowichan Region of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Cowichan first nations heritage

Cowichan, the ancestral home of the Cowichan tribes, is rich with fascinating First Nations culture and history. Duncan, known as the City of Totems, features more than 80 totems, forty of which are downtown, including the world’s widest totem; tour maps are available at the Cowichan Valley Museum and the Visitor Info Centre, and free guided tours are offered in the summer. As you tour the area, stop in at the many art galleries for a peek at some fine First Nations arts and crafts, including prints, carving, jewellery, and the renowned Cowichan sweaters. Duncan is also where you’ll find the world-renowned Quw’utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre, presenting First Nations heritage with interpretive tours, multimedia displays, salmon barbecues, and craft demonstrations; an on-site restaurant features First Nations cuisine. First Nations events include the annual Cowichan Tribe Canoe Races at Cowichan Bay in June and Thunder in the Valley, a pow wow featuring drumming and dancing competitions during the summer.
