Dozens of hiking and walking trails are located throughout Cowichan. One of the most popular hikes is the Cowichan River Footpath from Duncan to Skutz Falls, offering 20 kilometres of scenic riverside hiking (bring along your fly rod — the fishing is excellent). Nearby, the newly developed Trans Canada Trail follows an old rail route from Glenora to the town of
Lake Cowichan and features a number of refurbished trestles with incredible views. Another portion of the Trans Canada Trail winds through the West Shawnigan Lake area, passing through Koksilah River Provincial Park. Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park, reached by gravel road west of Cowichan Lake, has a network of trails through ancient rainforest (guided hikes are available). The trailheads for the West Coast Trail are also accessible from the Cowichan Lake area. Maple Mountain near Crofton, Mount Tzouhalem near Maple Bay, and Mount
Prevost north of Duncan all offer excellent hiking and stunning views. From Ladysmith, the Holland Creek Trails wind through the wilderness behind town.
