Outdoor Activities in Cowichan: Paddle Sports in the Cowichan Region of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Cowichan paddle sports

Cowichan Lake, the second largest lake on Vancouver Island, is ideal for canoes and kayaks, and it’s so big, you’ll never run out of scenery. The Cowichan River is rated one of the top white water rivers for kayaking in North America. Shawnigan Lake in South Cowichan and Quennell Lake northwest of Ladysmith are two more freshwater paddling options. Saltwater paddlers can explore the coastlines from Mill Bay, the harbour from Cowichan Bay, and Bird’s Eye Cove from Maple Bay. The harbour at Ladysmith is an excellent choice for paddlers of all levels, and the waters off Chemainus and Crofton offer more options. Tubing the Cowichan River has become a popular summer activity; local Info Centres have maps of safe tubing areas; guided trips are available.
