The Cowichan Bay Estuary, near the village of Cowichan Bay, is home to approximately 220 bird species, including eagles and trumpeter swans. Just north of Duncan, the new Pacific Northwest Raptors Educational Centre is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey. The centre is open to the public and offers demonstrations and courses, including how to "fly" a falcon. Just north of Duncan, the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Refuge is recognized as a Globally Significant Bird Area where more than 200 species have been identified.
