Tranquil Mayne Island has a colourful, varied history as a stopping point for Gold Rush miners en route to the mainland in the 1850’s, a turn-of-the-century vacation destination, and the former commercial hub of the Gulf Islands. Now, Mayne Island is a superb holiday retreat, and exploring the island’s historic buildings is a fascinating way to while away an afternoon. Historical highlights not to miss include St. Mary Magdalene Church, the old government dock, the 1890’s lodge, the agricultural hall, and the former jail, now a little museum with details on the island’s history.
Georgina Point Lighthouse Park is the perfect picnic spot, with a beach and views of Active Pass, while Dinner Bay Community Park features a baseball diamond, a picnic shelter, a small-boat launch, a beachfront swimming area, a putting green, a playground, and a memorial Japanese garden. More beaches await at Bennett Bay, Campbell Bay, Piggott Bay, and Oyster Bay. For a good bit of exercise, hike the steep, but worthwhile, 45-minute climb in Mount Parke Regional Park to a panoramic view at the 271-metre summit. Kayaking, cycling, diving, art gallery browsing, and farm tours are just a few more ways to enjoy this historic island.
