What’s growing on the Gulf Islands? Fruit, vegetables, lamb, eggs, seeds, flowers, trees, specialty cheese, wine, beer, and much more there’s even an apple farm that grows more than 180 varieties of apples! The Gulf Islands produce some truly delectable specialty foods and farm products, and enjoying the bounty of these islands can be an adventure in itself. Numerous farms and businesses on the Gulf Islands are frequently open to the public for tours and "direct-from-farm" shopping. "Honour stands" are scattered all over the Gulf Islands and are another wonderful way to sample the local flavour; take your pick of the products displayed and drop your money in the boxes provided. Seasonal, weekly farmer’s markets are another excellent way to taste the best Gulf Island goodies and, in addition to fresh produce and home-made treats, often also feature arts and crafts and local entertainment. Fall fairs are big annual events on the Gulf Islands and generally take place in late August or early September.
