The Courtenay and District Museum is guaranteed to impress kids of all ages wit its local history exhibits and awesome dinosaur displays, including a 12-metre-long Elasmosaur. In the summer months the museum offers guided day trips to th 80,000,000-year-old sea bed at the Puntledge River dig site so you can try your hand at digging for fossils. The Filberg Lodge and Park, located in Come is a gorgeous seaside estate built in 1929 on four hectares of impeccably landscaped grounds. West Coast-style military aviation is the focus at the Comox Air Force Museum. At the Cumberland Museum, discover the surprisingly big events that took place in this little town.
The Museum at Campbell River is another sure bet for the whole family and features exceptional exhibits on the rich First Nations heritage. Exhibits include film footage of the Ripple Rock explosion (the word’s largest non-nuclear, man­made explosion) and the Treasures of Siwidi, a powerful presentation on First Nations history. Lively programmes and field trips are offered year-round.
The former home of world-renowned nature conservationist and sport fisher, Roderick Haig Brown is an official B.C. Heritage Site and a centre for seminars on conservation, writing, and fly fishing. Other Campbell River attractions include: the Discovery Pier, Canada’s first saltwater fishing pier; the Quinsam Salmon Hatchery; and Transformations on the Shore, an impressive collection of driftwood carvings.
