In the Courtenay and Comox area, divers can explore the wreck of the Steamship Capilano, a freighter that sunk in 1915. Hornby Island is world-famous among divers. From May to September, Hornby Island and Nootka Sound are two of the only places in the world where elusive six-gill sharks can be spotted. The waterways surrounding the Discovery Islands offer more dive opportunities. Popular dive areas include Quadra Island, Seymour Narrows, Steep Island, and the Columbia, a 112-metre sunken destroyer. Nootka Sound’s many excellent dive sites are accessible from Gold River and Tahsis. |
