Alert Bay on Cormorant Island is graced with numerous First Nations paintings and totem poles, as well as historic buildings, such as the Anglican Church, St. George’s Chapel, and the old Cannery Building. Alert Bay is North Island’s oldest community and is a centre for Kwakwaka’wakw culture; guided walking tours are an excellent way to hear tales from the past. The U’mista Cultural Centre features an amazing collection of potlatch masks and regalia. The Ecological Park is another impressive highlight. In town, shop for First Nations arts and crafts and visit the Library-Museum. Superb eco-cultural tours, whale watching, and fishing charters are available.
