The North Island region is a significant area for First Nations culture. Ancient petroglyphs, or stone carvings, can be seen near Fort Rupert, the site of an ancient village and now the location of the Copper Maker Gallery. To learn more about both the First Nations and the European history, check out Port Hardy’s museum.
Alert Bay on Cormorant Island is where you’ll find the world-renowned U’mista Cultural Centre which houses the Poflatch Collection as a permanent exhibit. This is a collection of the repatriated masks and regalia taken from the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations in 1922 following the banning of potlatches by the government. Other exhibits include two award-winning videos and art by some of Alert Bay’s world-class artists. First Nations-guided tours of Alert Bay are an interesting way to see the sights. |
