If you’ve come to Vancouver Island to see wildlife in its natural habitat, North Island is the place to be. Orcas, also called killer whales or blackfish, travel through Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound each year, along with humpback, grey, and minke whales, seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Exciting tours to see marine mammals by boat are available. Other excellent wildlife tours include guided tours to see grizzly bears, black bears, and eagles, as well as customized sightseeing and eco-tours by boat or vehicle. In the Sayward area, watch for herds of Roosevelt elk, a species found only on Vancouver Island. Bird watchers will enjoy Winter Harbour, Telegraph Cove, Rough Bay near Sointula, the Salmon River Estuary near Sayward, Storey’s Beach in Port Hardy, the Ecological Park near Alert Bay, and the Zeballos Estuary.
