The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria holds a permanent collection of diverse art, including works by Emily Carr. The gallery also features an extensive collection of Japanese art and one of the only authentic Shinto shrines outside of Japan, as well as frequent touring exhibits, films, recitals, and special events. The Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery at the University of Victoria is another place to see a variety of art.
If you collect art, you are in for a treat. South Island’s many art galleries showcase works in all media. In addition, there are a number of annual art events, such as the Moss Street Paint-In and the Sooke Fine Arts Show. Visiting artists’ studios is a fantastic way to view and shop for art. Many studios welcome the public during scheduled open hours and by appointment. Sooke is especially well known for its art studios, and maps showing studio locations are available at the Sooke Travel Info Centre. For more information on the Arts, visit www.gobc.ca. |
