Forests, farms, parks, beaches, city — just choose the landscape you like — there’s sure to be a cycling route that can take you there. The Saanich Peninsula has some wonderful routes with names that say it all: Strawberry Fields Forever, Lands End Loop, the Best Beach Bike Route, Cole Bay Sun and Surf, and Flatlands Farm Route; the details on these routes are available at local Visitor Info
Centers. The Lochside Regional Trail is another good ride, leading 29
kilometers all the way from Sidney to the municipality of Saanich in Victoria. Victoria, named the Cycling Capital of Canada, is renowned as a city well
traveled on two wheels. The Seaside Cycle Route is an excellent scenic route that winds along the coast into Oak Bay, another very cycle-friendly area. The Galloping Goose Trail begins in downtown Victoria and extends westward for 55
kilometers, joining
Victoria with the West Shore Communities and Sooke. Parks along the western section of the Galloping Goose Trail include Roche Cove Regional Park, a lovely oceanside park; Matheson Lake Regional Park, a great place to cool off with a swim; and Sooke Potholes Provincial Park, also popular for swimming. The Sooke section of the Galloping Goose Trail carries on to Leechtown, the site of a bustling gold-mining community in the 1860’s.
If you’re a mountain biker, you’ll find challenging trails in the Millstream Highlands, as well as at the Hartland section of Mount Work Park, an attraction for single-track riders and the National Mountain Biking Team.
