First Nations history in the South Island region goes back thousands of years; Europeans didn’t start settling here until the mid-1800’s. The Royal B.C. Museum has an extensive First Nations exhibit with artifacts that vividly depict the history of these ancient cultures and the impact of European exploration and settlement. The museum also has a collection of ancient interns from throughout the province. More totems, mainly carved in the 1950’s by famed Kwakwaka’wakw artist Mungo Martin, are displayed in Thunderbird Park behind the museum.

jewelry by some of Canada’s most respected artists As well, a wide range of First Nations crafu such as Central Island sweaters, hand-beaded clothing, dream catchers, and other gifts are available in specialty shops. |
