When Vancouver Island was established as a British colony in 1849, the Crown charged the Hudson’s Bay Company a
yearly fee of seven shillings to lease the land.
The world-famous Fairmont Empress Hotel, a Victoria landmark, was designed by Francis Rattenbury and constructed on landfill over mud flats in 1908.
During the spring and summer, there are approximately 900
hanging flower baskets in Victoria’s downtown core.
There are 3,333 lights illuminating the provincial Legislative
Buildings in the evening.
The Butchart Gardens was once the site of a limestone
quarry and is now one of the area’s premier attractions.
