The mild climate and wonderful diversity of both rural and urban landscapes make the Vancouver Island region one of the world’s best year-round cycling destinations. Virtually every community offers a choice of scenic routes for all skill levels. Here are just a few favorites..

The Southern Gulf Islands — A great way to explore these beautiful islands; transporting bicycles is easy and affordable by ferry. Be sure to pick up a map and arrange for accommodation ahead of time.

Victoria — The Cycling Capital of Canada, Victoria is home to several excellent routes including the Galloping Goose, a 70-km trail that leads from downtown west to Sooke; the Lochside Trail, a 30— km trail between Victoria and Sidney; and scenic Marine Drive, a waterside route that passes several Victoria neighborhoods including Oak Bay.

Cowichan — A popular 12-km road-based route leads through the countryside past vineyards and a cidery. Another great route in the area follows an old railway bed from Skutz Falls along the Cowichan River.

Nanaimo — The 20-km paved Parkway and the E & N Railway Trait are two of the most popular cycle routes in the city. Other options include Gabriola, Newcastle and Protection Islands.

Port Atberni — The Log Train Trail offers 25-km of trail for hikers and cyclists through the beautiful Alberni Valley and leads to the Mclean Mill National Historic Site.

The Comox Valley — This diverse network of gnarly rainforest single-track to well—maintained urban routes offers something for alt riders. Nearby, Denman and Hornby Islands also get top marks from cyclists. For mountain bike traits with chairlift access, check out Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

Campbell River — The four-km Rotary Seawalk is an excellent, scenic choice for families. Other recommended cycling areas include the Snowden Demonstration Forest and Quadra Island.

Port Hardy — The seawall walkway extends from downtown to the viewing platform at the Quatse River Estuary and is great for cycling, roller blading and walking.
