Vancouver Island skiing and snowboarding

Every year, from December to April, Vancouver Island’s ski slopes bustle with activity as skiers and snowboarders reap the benefits of excellent ski facilities and record snowfalls (average of 30 feet each year!).

Mount Washington in the Comox Valley is the region’s biggest ski area and boasts the deepest all-natural snow base in Canada. This world— class   ski    resort    celebrates  its      25th anniversary this season, and features 50 alpine runs serviced by eight lifts, including two high-speed chairlifts including the Hawk High-Speed 6-Pack.

The popular snow-tube park, The Ozone, is also lift-serviced and offers both day and nighttime tubing. Snowboarders have two terrain parks to choose from, including an all natural half pipe groomed with a pipe grinder. For cross-country skiers, there are 55 km of scenic trails that lead along alpine lakes and through forests. There are also 20 km of snowshoe trails and a 300-metre natural luge track.

Mount Washington is accessible via the Strathcona Parkway from Highway 19. Accommodation is available on the Mountain at the resort, in the Comox Valley, a short 30 — minute drive away, or in Campbell River, approximately a 45-minute drive away.

Mount Cain is an excellent family skiing and snowboarding destination. It is popular with back — country skiers and powder seekers alike. Open on winter weekends, it features 18 runs serviced by two T-bars and a handle tow. Facilities include a day lodge with a restaurant and a ski shop that offers equipment rentals. Mount Cain is located off Hwy. 19, about two hours north of Campbell River.
