Hemp in Vancouver

If you’re overcome by an urge to experience, if just for a few minutes, what Kitsilano must have been like in the early “os, make your way to Kitsilano Hemp Co. (2918 West 4th Avenue, 604-730-1865). Here, you’ll find all the makings of cannabis culture — the magazines, posters, papers, and pipes — and that long, loose Indian clothing that many of us wore way back then (and a few still do).
But, hey, hemp has moved on, and this store (established in 1995) stocks bags, jeans, pants, shirts from Vermont, hats, and more, all made from the tough fibers of the cannabis sativa plant, as well as hemp twine in a variety of strengths and colors. And to heighten the mood, it also sells LPS from the ‘6os and ‘7os — Dylan, Baez, Pink Floyd.
Not far off Commercial Drive (how do these guys choose their locations?) sits Hemptown clothing (1307 Venables Street, East Vancouver, 604-255-5005, www.hemptownclothing.com) something of a one-product shop, it sells quality hemp T-shirts in natural colors, suitably styled for even the most conservative golfers among us.
