Expensive furnishing outlets abound, but here are a few places with unusual offerings at modest prices.
Blue Terra Designs (1146 Commercial Drive, East Vancouver, 604-253-1711) sells Indonesian and Moroccan furnishings and accessories. Stock includes artsy mood lamps, sconce lanterns, bamboo whatevers, tree-skin mats, and furniture of recycled teak.
Dream Designs (956 Commercial Drive, East Vancouver, 604-254-5012) offers collectibles such as North African basket-bowls, Indian canisters, and decorative Burmese pots. But Dream is more widely known for its natural futons and covers, and white and bleached cot¬tons, twills, flannels, and silks sold by the yard (or meter). It also sells yoga and meditation cushions, and soy, hemp, and beeswax candles.
Great Pacific Furniture Galleries (2946 Commercial Drive, East Vancouver, 604-872-4806, www.greatpacificfurniture.com) handles ultra-modern Italian imports — a kind of upscale IKEA at east-side prices. Particularly fetching are cushiony, hand-stitched leather couches from a European firm called Calia.
