For reasons that remain unfathomable to me, Irish places are enormously popular in this city. The weekend lineup ofunder-thirty folks outside Blarney Stone (216 Carrall Street, Gastown, 604-687-4322) routinely snakes along this somewhat seedy stretch of sidewalk. The Irish Heather (217 Carrall Street, Gastown, 604-688-9779) also packs them in with meals that run to bangers and mash, and unending pints ofGuinness. Actually, this pub feels almost authentic (without the true Irish pub’s smoke and snugs).
There’s also a nice old-wood atmosphere at Morrissey Irish Bar and Restaurant (1227 Granville Street, Downtown, 604-682-0909) and 10 beers, including Guinness and Kilkenny, on tap. This is some¬thing of a hangout for after-work types, music buffs, and, apparently, groups of women who like to be left alone. It also serves food of an un-Irish variety, such as wings and ribs.
