Left-leaning newspaper columnist Kevin Potvin opened Magpie Magazine Gallery (1319 Commercial Drive, East Vancouver, 604-253-6666) in the early ‘905, and it quickly became a Drive institu¬tion. Potvin stocks popular and hard-to-find mags: anything from the foreign editions of Marie Claire to UltraFlight or JustJazz Guitar. Political stuff enjoys a strong profile. And while Potvin carries the uK-based anti-fascist Fighting Talk, you’ll find nearby the right-wing Washington Monthly (much to the annoyance of a few patrons).
While Magpie thrives in the heart of the east side, Kent McKenzie and Dennis Topp run a corresponding store: Does your mother know? Magazines, etc. (2139 West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano, 604-730-1110). Less political and more likely to be flogging a hefty stack of Sunday New York Times, it’s nonetheless accessible and inviting, and stocks a lot of magazines right across the spectrum.
