When the westerly winds blow over the beaches and parks of seaside Vancouver, it can be pretty chilly. An option for a cool but sunny day is to escape to Deer Lake Park in South Burnaby, off Highway 1 at Canada Way. Deer Lake is an utterly placid body of water fed by dozens of small streams in a park crisscrossed with trails. In contrast to the coastal rainforest, this pocket of deciduous forest and marshy foreshore cooks in summer. It’s a great place to picnic or lounge. Un¬fortunately, swimming is not advised.
However, aptly named Silent Waters Boat Rentals (also at Deer Lake, 604-667-2628), beyond the entrance to the Burnaby Village Museum, rents rowboats, pedalboats, canoes, and kayaks from March to October. High school athletes train here by boating, running, and cycling around the perimeter in triathlon-like succession.
