Paper Shops in Vancouver

Paperhaus (3057 Granville Street, Central Vancouver, 604-737-2225, www.paperhaus.com) sells quality fiber products that range from German-made photo albums and functional portfolios to hand-silk-screened wrapping paper from Italy. It also sells metal-based binders and pens (or, rather, “instruments”) to die for all postmodern knickknacks coveted by the design, art, and architecture cognoscenti.
Urban Source (3126 Main Street, East Vancouver, 604-875-1611), which sells “alternative art materials,” is heaven for those who love sheaves of great, leftover paper and oddments such as yet-to-be-folded little gold paper boxes, raffia, copper wire, glitter, film tins, and similar esoterica.
A different kind of source is a shop founded by artists — Paper-Ya (in the Net Loft, 1666 Johnston Street, Granville Island, 604-684-2531). Here, in the drawers of large wooden cabinets, repose sheets of luscious handmade paper in a variety of textures and colors, mostly from Thailand and India. The gallery-like store also stocks luxury leather-bound notebooks and albums, other literary-related items, and imported art cards.
Related is the Vancouver Pen Shop (512 West Hastings Street, Downtown, 604-681-1612). If you despair that the world of fountain pens and ink bottles is vanishing, or yearn for a futuristic writing implement that will place you ahead of the crowd, you’ll feel quite satiated at this well-stocked emporium and Vancouver institution.
Those at the higher end of the social register should know about Wintons Social Stationery (2529 West Broadway, Kitsilano, 604-731-3949). If you’re looking for writing paper or wedding invitations that will hint at your good taste, wealth, or status, this is your shop (the stuff here is drop-dead gorgeous).
