Belgian Fries (1885 Commercial Drive, East Vancouver, 604-253-4220) specializes in poutine. It’s hard to believe that this Quebec-born concoction of French fries slathered in cheese curd and gravy could be popular on the West Coast, but, well, it just is. Belgian frites come in a paper cone with classic mayo, or toppings such as curry, chutney, Jamaican heat, garlic, and honey mustard. Also available is a Dutch treat known oddly as “war” — or maybe not so oddly, when you consider the stomach: it’s a mix of peanut satay sauce, mayon¬naise, and sweet onion on fries.
