Six hundred gallons of soup are consumed weekly on Granville Island, much of it from the Stock Market (northeast side of the Granville Island Public Market, 604-687-2433). The choice usually includes at least one with a fish and another with a vegetarian base. I like the cream vegetarian soups, always served with a fresh, grainy roll. But be sure to let the soup cool a little before even tasting; it comes straight from huge steel vats kept at a mean boil.
On a wintry day, stop at Soup, Etcl (1091 Hamilton Street, Yaletown, 604-689-4505; also Metrotown in Burnaby) for a sweet cream of squash soup; they also serve a “campfire stew” Soupspoons (2278 West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano, 604-734-7687; and 990 Denman Street, West End, 604-408-5181) has also established a good reputation among fans of soup and inexpensive lunches.
Pia’s Take-a-Lunch (605 West Pender Street, Downtown, 604-684-2737) is renowned for its quality, if traditional, Danish sandwiches. For a Californian-style alternative, there’s the popular Roxie’s and Company (1833 West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano, 604-734-5097). Terra Breads (2380 West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano, 604-736-1838) can do no wrong and is as well known for its hefty sandwiches as it is for its breads.
