There are those among us who hanker to witness a wedding party all done up in rented tuxes and six-of-a-kind dresses, a resplendent bride in innocent white, etc., etc. You know who you are. One place to find them is Queen Elizabeth Park (off Cambie Street and West 33rd Avenue, Central Vancouver) on any pleasant Saturday afternoon between May and October.
If it’s blazingly sunny, prepare for a crush. You’re likely to see a wedding party in particularly fancy attire; affairs dripping with jewels and other expressions of wealth; and humdrum family collectives, all confusion, trailing grandparents and chaotic children. The profes¬sional photographers will be plotting their time and space in one of the park’s two lovely steep-walled former rock quarries, filled with grass, gardens, and romantic draws such as a small footbridge. So great is the demand for prime picture-taking locations that you may have the pleasure of witnessing a nasty dispute simmering — just below the surface, of course. If you’d like to join the fray, you can buy handmade wedding gowns on themes running from medieval to Victorian at Venus & Mars Universal Clothing (315 Cambie Street, Downtown, 604-687-1908, www.venusandmars.nu). Owner Sanné Lambert has been making these “ethereal robes of velvet, embossed, Gothic styles” for more than a decade. While she sells for grads and formals, weddings are her big market.
Still in this category, The House Gallery Boutique (2865 West 4th Avenue, Kitsilano, 604-732-8647) sells gorgeous vintage and ready¬to-wear, and makes Tudor and Victorian apparel to order.
